Blog Task for Monday 26th November 2012

As mentioned in the last session, I'm away in Manchester at the UCAS Recruitment Fayre for the University monday 26th Nov so I said that instead we'd build on what you all did last week and get you to create mockup 'home' and 'inner' pages for your chosen GDES2000 brief [iStraw or IPT]. The requirements for this task are as follows:

DELIVERABLES
Mockups Task for Monday 26th Nov, 2012
• Create a total of 2x mockups of what your web pages might look like in Photoshop.
• No. 1 must be your anticipated design for how your 'homepage' might look.
• No. 2 will be what your anticipated inner page style might look like.
- Size: (please see your chosen brief for size needs) pixels [landscape].
- Colour format: RGB [for screen not for print so don't do CMYK].
- Document resolution: 72dpi [for screen not for print so don't set it to 300dpi]
TIP: When creating new document in Photoshop set it to 'Web' in the preset drop-down. Then select '(required width/height sizes in pixels on the briefs) in the size drop-down..

TIP: Think about a simple grid layout as you would a printed page design [i.e. 3 or 4 columns] and then lay this out using Photoshop's rulers. This will help keep your designs clear and well laid-out.

TIP: Look at the 2x 'Bickerton' page mockups I discussed in the last session which are linked on the module's timetable page [here].
Hand-In
• Please simply attach both of these images as a .jpg [make sure you file > save for web in pshop -medium quality- and save as a .jpg] to an e-mail to me.
• [Andy St Group] These e-mails will be timed and dated, to meet the day's deadline this must be in before 6pm on monday 26th Nov. I'll be recording who gets work in and when for my assessment notes.

N.B. Andy Sc group and Sam Collett group - they will advise on their wants by mail.
What then?
• Once back from Manchester I'll be uploading each of these on the blog and will comment on each person's work to date.
• I'll also send the blog post and your ideas to date to your clients for further comment too.

Client Discussions - IPT and iStraw

Please find the video of the IPT brief discussion with Dharma on monday this week.

The mic from the vid cam picked up Dharma from the nearby speakers but you'll need to up the volume to hear the tutor's comments etc.

Chosen Brief - Where are You At?

Now that you've chosen your brief to work to you should be involved in the initial research and planning stages for your site's re-design. In comments below could you answer the following:

N.B. Remember that the 'Chrome' browser works best on the DAC's macs for putting-in blog comments - Safari has shown that it's a bit hit and miss at it..

Please put first:
• Your name
• What brief you've chosen
• Which tutor/session you're with.

Site maps:
1. Have you created a site map yet for your chosen site?
2. Does it have explanatory notes and comments on it as opposed to just graphical boxes and lines?
3. Is it the sort of thing that would be easily understood if handed to a client without further explanation? If 'no' then what do you need to add do you think?

Key page wireframes:
1. How many key page layouts do you see on the existing chosen site?
2. Have you summarised these yet into page wireframes (without any designs inc. at all)?
3. Have you added any notes to the wireframes, if 'no' then would these be easily understood if handed to a client without further explanation?

Initial research
1. Name 3 sites that you've picked up from your initial research into similar sites over the last few weeks you've had the brief.
2. Is there a most notable find research-wise and if 'yes' then why do you think this?
3. Have you pasted-in screen pics from these sites and your notes/thoughts into your layout pads and/or blogs?

Initial sketch ideas
1. On the back of initial research into other similar sites (and your own thoughts over the last couple of weeks) have you started to sketch-out thumbnail ideas yet in your layout pads and add some notes/thinking? If 'no' then what are your plans?

GDES2000 - Students and Briefs - 2012

We've two briefs on offer this year which will have been emailed to you after your sessions in week 4. What we'd like to know after you've had chance to read them through is:

1. Which brief you're likely to run with this year. In terms of time commitment and complexity they're both the same but have very different natures.

2. Why?

3. Please add your name/your tutor's name.

GDES2000: Final Student Working Prototype Websites 2012

Below are the links to the various final 'working prototype' websites created by students on the module.

Museums Website

Vitor Bernardo (disk didn't boot up on test machine, could not load on server)

“Moreover the whole idea of the major project for the module was motivating and appealing and although the teaks were not easy to perform, it was engaging and it was a great challenge to overcome… the module helps developing a combination of skills, which not only build abilities to work in industry, but also improves personal efficiency.”

“I also feel that I’ve learned quite a bit in terms of what is possible when it comes to website design”

Louise Thomas

  • Richard Wilson (all uploaded on server but files seem corrupted)

Beeline Fest Website

“The module as a whole was a deep learning curve and one I greatly enjoyed, I loved the freedom to create what we wanted with the majority of the website..”

“I have also learned a lot about website design and the processes involved including mapping, which I would never have realised beforehand and page layout. I have gained a lot of understanding too about how people use websites… and will take this into my future design work.”

  • Peter Lee
“Multimedia and Graphic Design on the web was the perfect module in terms of educational value, as well as in terms of challenging concepts. There was a lot of researching on this module, as well as an awful lot of inspiration.”
Irina Manoila

Matt Maynard
“Overall I feel that the module has extensively challenged my design and coding capability and has taught me how intensively Web Design can actually be along with both personal (what is possible) and client (what needs to be done) expectations when creating a website."

“I have learned a lot over the course of this module. Considering I had no idea how to make a website before starting this module, I now feel confident in designing, developing and building my own website from gound-up, which I consider to be a huge leap in my knowledge… The internet is a very important tool and I will use the skills I have learned through this module throughout the rest of my career.”

“Throughout the module Graphic Design and the Internet I have learned how to design and produce my own website to a specification and how to design for a ‘live’ client.”

Beeline Fest Pics

The links below will allow you to download both a set of low res images from 2010's fest as well as a reminder of the link we put up on the blog ages back for the logos and artwork from Piet..

Images .zip (8Mb)

(This should bring you to a white Google Doc page, then select: File > download from the menu underneath the page's title. It should then start to download the .zip file to your machine's 'normal' download location which you'll have pre-arranged).
