Like the flexibility of the layout here Lauren. It does have distinct areas but the wavy lines make it feel quite nice and informal. Poss suggest that there's a little more gap though between the content section and the header/navigation as it looks a little too close at this moment.. Can't see any footer info or secondary links on there as yet though or a UW logo tucked-away somewhere [doesn't have to be prominent].
I like the look and feel of this site, the insects add a nice charm and you want to explore the site immediately. I think you could get away with a little Flash on this page, maybe with the bees tracing the line under the title and the odd butterfly at the bottom of the page fluttering...nice:)
I like your design Lauren it is in key with the theme and has a nice blend of 'kids style' images and typography which is inviting but not too stylized. I also think the layout is effective with plenty of room for content. The only thing I could fault is that the buttons don't work...just kidding:p
I like the bee graphics for dividing sections. The overall design is playful and childish, which makes it accessible for kids.
One thing I'd say you should change is the drop shadows. The header font is intended to look hand-written, so a shadow does not work here and makes it look unrealistic. I also don't think a shadow is needed on the lines inbetween the navigation buttons as it almost takes my attention away from the buttons themselves.
I like the grass imagery at the bottom and I feel it works well. Good initial photoshop design.
