We're interested in knowing more about your choice of brief.. Now that there's been a visit to the Hurd Library and Jean has met those that are keen to undertake the storytelling brief, please answer the following questions each [as an 'anonymous' comment - click on the pencil icon or 'comments' at the bottom of the post]. This way we start to build-up a slow but sure picture of your individual interests and sensibilities
[Your name] from [either Andy Screen's or Andy Stevo's group - you put here].
A) Which brief did you choose?
B) Give two reasons why you thought this brief the more interesting one. [this could be "I went to the visit" or maybe "I liked it more when Jean explained it" etc].
C) What initial research and examples are you looking at? Give two examples [these could be descriptions of what you've looked at or maybe websites that aren't already given you on the brief].
D) What is your next step?
Rhys Paul from Andy Screens group.
ReplyDeleteA.) I chose the Hurd Library
B.) The reasons are because:
1. I found the Hurd library quite intriguing when I went to visit it, the architecture, the hand rendered and early printed books were interesting to examine.
2. The storytelling brief has been done before over again, therefore the public would have seen everything that has been done before.
The library brief is something new and in my mind quite challenging to do since this is something I have never done before and therefore would give me a lot of practice not just to design, but to come up with a suitable concept that is completely new to me.
C.) At this point I haven't researched anything yet. I have taken a few images on my visit to give me a starting point. But I will start researching a bit more deeply into this but not too deep.
D.) (As mentioned above), I will be researching a number of resources if possible, but first I need to start by looking for any suitable websites that give information about the origins of the Library.
Ben from Andy Stevo's group.
ReplyDeleteA) I chose the Hurd Library brief.
B) Reason 1: The brief appealed to me on an innovative level, it was instantly the most attractive choice for me because of the flood of ideas I instantly had for it. The children story telling brief was perhaps not as engaging for me and the ideas were not as strong. Going with the strongest option was therefore my choice.
Reason 2: The Hurd library was an interesting brief to receive regarding the need for photography. I wish to improve my skills as a photographer so using my time researching the library from a photographic point of view would mean I could spend time taking interesting photographs to be included in the layout and content of the finished piece.
C) Initial research examples:
1. http://www.wow-europe.com/en/index.xml - For its old, medievally style layout.
2. http://www.altontowers.com/ - Something a little more fun and colourful perhaps.
My main aim is to combine the commercial attraction aspect and with a suitable genre / feel of the site to bring out the feel of the library.
D) Plan my next stages carefully. Get the sitemap finished, Begin some initial visuals and spend time at the Hurd library taking a shed load more photos with an SLR.

A)
Hurd Library
B)
1 - I was originally inclined to commit to the Story Telling brief, although after the first meet with client, I felt the brief was not at a stage of which I would be comfortable to commit to - nothing was concrete enough.
2 - I feel I will have more scope, and that I will be able to benefit more from the Hurd Library project; I'm interested in advancing my understanding of information architecture and UX.
C)
I haven't specifically looked at any websites directly related to this project; but I will do when I get a spare half hour.
D)
Project planning, target market etc Usual jazz.

ReplyDeleteA+B) I chose the Hurd Library. Theoretically I should have chosen the children's book festival as I felt the brief lent itself to my skill set, more so than the former. However having sat through the Hurd presentation I realized that it would be a much bigger challenge (and hopefully a lot more fun) to make this small, elongated, cold and slightly pungent room seem interesting through the medium of design. I may be wrong.
C) The obvious step in terms of research is to look at existing libraries that have dynamic encapsulating sites, which is important but also I think it's important to look at a much much wider gamut of sites that have employed a plethora of techniques to engross it's audience.
D) I'm particularly invested in giving the project a really authentic and 'magical' feel, so aside from researching similar sites I'm going to try really hard to learn Dreamweaver so I can actually execute my ideas, unfettered.
A) Story telling brief
ReplyDeleteB) i chose this brief because i think that you can be more creative, all tho it would be challenging to do the other one because it may not be as exciting or interesting. as it was my first instinct i am going to go with it.
C) mock up some website layouts, do some research to see what else is out there
Ida Pettersson - Andy Screens group
ReplyDeleteI liked the place, it was interesting. And I couldn't make it to the Storytelling session.
I have looked at some libraries online, museum ones as well. Then I have had a look of the Hurd webpage what it looks like at the moment.
Next step would be to take a sketchbook and start doodling off some ideas.
Vishnu Parmar / Andy Screen / Story Telling
ReplyDeleteB) I think you can be more creative and sounding interesting when i read the brief.
C) Ive look at the Current site and have looked at some of last years.
D) My next step is to continue my research and start a site plan
Maria Bayley, Andy Screens group.
ReplyDeleteIv chosen to do the hurd library brief, as i like the level of scope for creativity it gave and it is ultimately something I will enjoy doing, the information from the client was also a lot more concrete.
Iv looked at other website idea's from this blog as research aswel as the current live site for a navigation and content purpose.
My next step would be to sketch out my initial ideas.
A.) I chose the Hurd Library
ReplyDeleteB.)
1. The reason why I chose this brief is because, since this is completely new to me, I am going to be able to answer this brief in my own way due to that there is no particular structure. With that being said, I can try and come up with a solution which is experimental and interesting to look at.
2. The story telling brief has been done before over and over and therefore it will be complicated to come up with anything new.
C.) At this moment in time, I have taken some images but that is all the initial research I have done so far.
D.) I will look at other examples of websites similar to the Hurd site. I want to find a site that promotes something which is not so interesting to others but at the same time, the creativity makes a website fun to look at, therefore, I can get some idea on how I can approach my own project. Hopefully if i'm lucky, i'll try and find some leaflets and posters if there are any to give me some idea to what has been done in terms of design and what hasn't as well.

Children's storytelling festival:
I thought this brief would be more interesting as the audience is children, who are creative and get bored easily by simple designs.
Secondly the library brief didn't inspire me at all, it left me uninterested. The history of the library was too scattered, pulling events out of books, they had no clear timeline history about the library.
My initial research is looking into existing websites that are for festivals, children, green and about the environment. Picking out good designs, bad design and elements i like from the sites.
Film festival:
http://www.planetmediazone.com/clients - http://www.ceff.net/
Green festival:
http://www.greenman.net/
My next step would be to take some of these good ideas for inspiration and start with paper visuals, site structure roughs and page layout roughs.
A) Hurd Library
ReplyDeleteB) I see this brief as more of a challenge to create an interest in something that most people might not find very engaging.
I also see it as a more of a professional, historic brief to use as a potential portfolio piece.
C) http://www.nypl.org/ -NY Public Library
http://www.bl.uk/ -British Library
D) Research other similar websites, analysing their good and bad points and approaches to creating interest.

ReplyDeleteA) The Hurd Library
B) I thought it was a fascinating opportunity to be involved with historical works.
The project lends itself to working with a CMS, which I'd like to have practical experience with.
C) http://www.llgc.org.uk/index.php?id=2
http://www.courtauld.ac.uk/booklibrary/
D) I have some further questions that I'd like to ask Rachel and Chris before returning to the library.

ReplyDeleteAfter I heard the recording of the Children Story Telling brief I liked more the ideas that they posed.
This brief gives me more freedom for the design process because it interacts with children and leaves the freedom for animation.

ReplyDeletei have chosen to do the Hurd's Library.
When i went to visit it i found that theres lots of in-depth history behind it and there is lots of character.
ill be visiting the Hurd's library again for research.
[Andy Stevo]
ReplyDeleteExcellent - thanks guys for adding your comments. This way we'll build-up a set of thinking and pointers to use for back ref when we're thinking about process and what's next.. It'll be good to get my group's thinking up here [thanks Creative Ben for working ahead of the game].

ReplyDeleteI have chosen the storytelling brief as i think is the more creative brief, i was originally going to choose the Hurd library but once visiting it i decided against it!
I have looked at many websites that target children and i have also researched in to the principles of designing for children and adults.
My next step is to start my initial thumb nail ideas.
Julie
ReplyDeleteA) I chose the Children's storytelling brief.
B) I felt that this was the better brief particularly for me as I felt much more engaged with it when Jean explained.
It also caught my attention as it links in with one of my other modules which is interface design for children.
C) At the moment i have been looking at the previous websites made from the previous years to see what kind of things they had done. Also i have been looking at children's websites to get some ideas about how websites engage children but are suitable to give adults information as well.
D) My next step is to design the pages, where the navigation bar will go etc. Start doing some photography so it's ready for the website, and get onto Dreamweaver and start building!
Nathan Poppleton
ReplyDeleteA. I choose the Hurd Library briefe.
B. 1. I found the briefe a little more interesting as the information that i could put in i thought could be a little more extensive.
2. After going there i saw most of the books in the library. And had a few ideas in my head whilst heading round the room.
C. 1. I starting looking at other library websites. Mainly University sites as they seem to be much more open with there designs.
2. Also looked at main stream sites and saw that it was'nt what i had in mind.
D. Actually taking it onto the computer and design a few ideas on illustrator first an taking them into dreamwever.

ReplyDeleteA) Which brief did you choose? - I have chosen the Hurd Library brief.
B) Give two reasons why you thought this brief the more interesting one. - This was the only visit I could make unfortunately, it's lead me to become a little biased on my though process towards ideas for the brief. (Ideas for this brief came to me much sooner than the Storytelling Festival.
C) What initial research and examples are you looking at? Give two examples. - I've been looking at various websites for museums & libraries that have that old, rustic feel... However I've also been looking at websites like http://www.warhol.org/ for a possible idea of a more contemporary feel.
D) What is your next step? - As the sitemap is now already in place (even though I have a few questions about changing a few things), I have been sketching out ideas for layout and various media elements that I can implement into the design. (Such as jQuery slideshows, etc..)

ReplyDeleteA+B) I've chosen to do the Childrens Storytellers brief. Firstly because I had plenty more ideas when reading the brief. I found the content more appealing.
Secondly after the client meeting I was more inspired by the event itself as I like the idea of designing for a younger audience.
C) My initial research has been looking at existing websites that are aimed towards a young audience, general library sites and the links included in the brief.
D) My next step is to carry on looking at designs of current websites and begin to sketch out some possible layouts for my site.
Roz Port from Andy Stevensons group
ReplyDeleteA) I chose the Hurd Library brief
B) The two reasons I found this brief more interesting were -
I found the history of the library very interesting and want to focus on this when designing my site
I wanted to gain some experience of designing a schools section for the website, having looked at other examples
C) What initial research and examples are you looking at?
2 example sites I have looked at are -
http://www.beamish.org.uk/Education.aspx
http://www.londonlibrary.co.uk/
D) What is your next step?
My next step is to revisit the Hurd Library to take some higher quality photographs. I am also planning to research the history behind the library further.
Sami Dore. Andy Stevenson
ReplyDeleteI have chosen to do the Hurd Library. Initially after reading the two briefs I wanted to do the Children's Storytelling one however after visiting the library I was inspired by its uniqueness, character and beauty. Also with the storytelling brief everything was up in the air and nothing was finalised therefore the information wasn't concrete making it hard to start creating a site. This brief is also more challenging.
I have researched more into the Hurd library on their website and i have many ideas. for example taking the books out of themselves onto the screen, like the gothic type and 'old' style writing. I will be visiting the library again to get a better insight. I have also taken many photos and a video of the library
The next step will be putting my initial ideas onto paper
Yoana Andy Stevo
ReplyDeleteA)I have chosen to do the Storytelling festival
B) I think this brief gives us more opportunities to be creative and to do different styles of working.
C)I have looked at the websites done in previous years and I intend to look at other children related sites.
Daniel Matthews
ReplyDeleteA) Storytelling Festival 2011
B) After the Client visit, I had a better idea of the target audience. I thought it would be a challenge tailoring my design to a range of audiences from children, parents and staff. Also, having looked at the range of previous years sites I found a lot of inspiration and scope to develop ideas and create a really great animated story.
C) Looking through the previous years winners and last years other entries, I thought there were some really great sites, some I thought better than 2010's winner, which makes me think I really need to put a lot of work into making a fantastic animated story (better than) The Lonely Fish which obviously gave the winning site the edge with the judges.
http://www.bristolstoryfest.co.uk/
A cool looking intro page, but sadly let down by the rest of the design and not much information on the site really.
http://www.weststoryfest.co.uk/
A not so cool looking site but simpler to use and jam packed with information.
D) My next step is to generate a brainstorm if ideas and start thumbnailing layout designs and navigation concepts for my site.

ReplyDeleteHi folks,
Some really nice refs coming up already - all these links and suggests really help the majority of folks see what other directions they could look in too..
With luck we'll get Rachel, Chris and Jean to comment on here too so that we can get client feedback on some points..
Jean Webb. Thank you to those who have chosen the Storytelling site. I have read your thoughts and certainly see the possibility for a creative and lively approach. Reviewing previous sites was a good strategic move, as is looking at other sites which have children involved or are to do with various Festivals. I look forward to your forthcoming thoughts and comments. Of course I am always willing to respond to individual questions or queries.
ReplyDeleteJean Webb
There are some excellent ideas here. I was amused at the description of the Hurd Library as "pungent"! I hope you didn't find it too smelly! Old books often smell a bit musty and it was too cold to have the window open. When you have all developed your ideas get in touch about a further visit. It will be helpful if you can come in groups as I am not there every day.

A)The Hurd Library
B) I feel that the Hurd Library brief will allow me to be more visionary.
When reading the brief, I was immediately drawn to the Hurd Library, as it felt more interesting and would allow me to be demiurgic. I visited the Library and was inspired by the original and innovative bookshelves, paintings and plaster-work.
C) I've looked at a range of websites, that I think are germane to the look and feel of the Library:
These are;-
National Portrait Gallery: http://www.npg.org.uk/ . I liked the way the portraits were displayed in the website, it was simple and easy to navigate, and the colours used were neutral, so not to distract the viewer from the portraits.
Westminster Abbey: http://www.westminster-abbey.org/our-history
What I loved the simplified look of the website, the chronological timeline bar is a great idea, as it allows the user to skip centuries in the Abbeys history, which gives the user a taking part experience.
D) The next step is to start rough website templates ranging 4-6 ideas, and then to work through those 4-6 and choose which 2-3 I feel work the best and keep narrowing down to a final design that I feel reflects what the Library has inspired in me.

A) Story telling festival
B) I think theres a bit more opportunity to be creative and i feel i know more about the brief as well as it being more interesting.
C) I've been looking at different story/book festivals, nothing too creative or inspiring but it gives an idea of basic layout and content. I've aslo been looking at past story telling festival websites.
D) To look at possible site maps and more reserch into the festival as well as putting together some rough thumbnails.

A) I chose the Storytelling festival brief
B) I chose this brief because I feel that it allows more room for creative freedom and is more open to interpretation in regards to the site's overall design, and I think it's the kind of brief I'd take on when working in the industry.
C & D) I've only looked at the previous entries for this particular brief but intend to look at other sites based around children as their target audience such as similar events, and look at children's books and illustrations to get some inspiration for ways of incorporating theme into the site.

I have chosen "The Hurd Library"
a) It was the more convenient option (i live 10 mins away)
b) I love books, and IĆ¢€™m keen to research the LibraryĆ¢€™s collection, I am also interested in local history so will engage more with the project
C) I have looked at websites that are home to various medieval manuscripts and books of special interest:
St John's College Library
The Library at Liverpool University
The British Library
Bodleian Library, University of Oxford (centre for the study of the book)
Corpus Christi College
c)My next step is to Meet with Chris Penney, Take Photographs of the library and research the publications available, before creating a theme for the website.
