GDES2000 - Students and Briefs - 2012

We've two briefs on offer this year which will have been emailed to you after your sessions in week 4. What we'd like to know after you've had chance to read them through is:

1. Which brief you're likely to run with this year. In terms of time commitment and complexity they're both the same but have very different natures.

2. Why?

3. Please add your name/your tutor's name.

  1. I am going to be doing brief B (I straw) I chose to do this one as I like that it is for a specific product, I also think that it can be taken in more ways where as the other brief would require a more specific, corporate outcome. I straw would allow me to experiment with styles as it is for a less formal purpose.

  2. I have thought over both briefs but I am yet to come to a concrete decision. I feel the iStraw brief could be a little bit more creative because it is more of a flamboyant product, however I have designed artistic/creative things before, and I think in order to stretch my own abilities and portfolio it might be an interesting move for me to choose the Government brief as it is a challenge I haven't come across yet, and asks for a different style of presentation, with a different style of communication compared to the iStraw.

  3. I've decided to go with the IPT brief because I think there's more content to start working with, and the focus seems to be on making the information more accessible, rather than the iStraw which needs a lot of work on marketing aspects.

  4. I have decided on doing the IPT brief. It seems to have more content available, which provides more ideas with what to do with it, it also seems that the website serves more of a purpose than the iStraw, which is just really to advertise and sell a product.

Mainly I think that the IPT brief gives more flexibility to me as a designer.

  5. I have decided to go with iStraw. I have chosen this one because it seems more 'open' than the IPL one,a nd also has alot more scope for things like audience and design. I think this site can be more colourful and cartoon-like in comparison to the other which is very political. You can also aim it at any chosen audience which I think is easier than having one set one.

  6. As the briefs are so similar Its hard to choose which one to run with. I'm going to do some more research but As it stands I'm leaning towards the Redesign and rebuild of the Industry & Parliamentary Trust website. Its slightly more interesting for me compared to the IStraw. I also feel it has more potential.

  7. After carefully looking at both briefs I decided to go with the iStraw brief because I fing it more interesting and challenging compared to the IPT. I already have a lot of ideas and can't wait to get started.

  8. I have chosen to go with the Industry and Parliament Trust Brief. I have chosen this brief as I feel I wouldn't know exactly who to aim the iStraw brief towards as the market for it could be quite wide and I feel that with the government site the audience is much more specific. I feel there is also a lot more that can be done with this site than with the istaw site and it is in need of an update.

  10. The brief I have chosen to go with is 'iStraw'
I have chosen this brief as I believe it offers more creative possibilities and scope for design. I am also very interested in the product itself which I believe is an important factor in keeping me motivated throughout the project.

  11. I have yet to make a firm decision between the two briefs. A the moment i think I will be going with Brief B ( iStraw) as I believe there are a multiple pathways in which i could choose to explore, and this will then subsequently help me to create the most suitable design for the product. I also believe that that i would enjoy designing for this product more then the IPT brief.

  13. ive decided to go with the istraw as i feel that it is more interesting and exciting to look at and work with. i've never designed anything for parliament before so i may be taking a risk. with istraw i'm more confident and have many ideas to work with this. i'm happy that istraw is based upon the one product so i can confidently start working on it right away. the government brief isn't to my interest so i could get bored half way in the making.

    iStraw Brief

    key page wire frames:

    1) From what I can see i think there may be three key page layouts on the existing website.
    2) I have done this for the the home page and also the page that explains what the iStraw is.
    3) I have yet to add notes to these wire frames

    Initial research

1/2) I have briefly looked over a number of website that potentially be useful however I need to look into them in further detail to see which of these are most notable.
3)I have yet to paste in screen pics from these sites and make notes in my layout pad/ Blog

    Initial sketch ideas

    1) I have briefly looked over some similar sites and have to start to sketch-out ideas and make notes in my sketch pad.

  16. 1. Which brief you're likely to run with this year. In terms of time commitment and complexity they're both the same but have very different natures.

    Istraw

    2. Why?

To me its the most interesting brief out of the two, It looks like it offers more possibilities in terms of exploring adventurous design rather then the formal government brief
