Task 04 Decision and notes on brief choice
Now you've been given the chance to look over both briefs, we want you to have made a provisional decision on which brief you're choosing by Monday 24th Oct [next monday]. This may or may not be your final choice and even if you've noted your thoughts here about one then you can still come [if you wish] to both client meetings associated with the briefs [see timetable for details].
Please comment [click 'comments' below] as follows:
1. Write [Your Name] and [Which tutor you have].
2. Write at least one sentence for the following questions about your brief:
- Q. Which brief have you chosen - give two reasons reasons for your choice?
- Q. What initial research or considerations might you start with?
Sam Hall, Andy Stevenson
ReplyDeleteI have chosen the Beeline Festival Brief because i am doing the same theme for my illustration module which makes it a lot easier to focus on and possibly bring some of my illustration work into this website that i will be creating. I have always seemed to connect well with children and so i think that working on a brief based around them as an audience would suit me well.
I will probably first start by looking at previous designs and at other websites created with children at the heart of their audience and take, from those, any elements that are important in the design and layout of a childrens website and so familiarize myself with the style. From there onwards i will start to design wire frames etc.
Adam Southall - Andy Stevenson
ReplyDeleteI have chosen the Beeline brief as i feel it offers a lot more opportunities to be creative with the design, particularly with the multimedia content in the second semester. I think it will be interesting creating a style that suits both adults and children, as although the festival itself is focussed on children the website needs to suit an adult audience as they are the people most likely to read up on the festival.
I think that the first step for the brief will be looking at the background of the festival itself and any themes that can be taken forward into the design stage. Also, looking at existing websites, related to the themes or not, will be a good starting point as inspiration can be found from them. I also think that the creation of a logo for the site is important as often a stand out logo can draw people in, so starting to work on this would be ideal.

ReplyDeleteI have chosen to do Beeline Storytelling Fest Brief Discussion because of Sam Hall's same reason (am doing the same event for illustration) Also because i am away for the other, so this seems to be logical! Plus i love the concept of the beeline passing on oral information by story telling and hopefully this passion will go into creating an awesome website!
I recon the first step will be to do back ground research. Knowing if there are similar festivals and how to make this one the best! And i also agree with Adam Southall, there needs to be a logo.

ReplyDeleteI have chosen the Beeline Storytelling Festival brief as it is the one I am more personally interested in doing. The reason for this is that I feel that you can be extremely creative with layout and design that if done well can suit an adult and child audience with a clean simple look and easy navigation. When I was younger I was a huge fan of reading and poetry and wish I had an opportunity to go to festivals just for children, so this gives me the incentive to really sell the idea through the webpage.
I am starting with doing research on current children's festivals. Luckily through my location I have been able to visit the Cheltenham literature festival first hand and see what the layout and feel of it is for the children's books and activities. I will also look at national level websites and focus on how I will layout the navigation.

ReplyDeleteAs yet, I haven't chosen one of the briefs; on the one hand, I'd like to do the Beeline brief because I can be a bit freer with my designs and colour schemes as they would appeal to children, whereas with the Library brief, I can be more bespoke and functional.
To help me make my mind up, I'd like to attend both of the Q&A sessions to see if either of them will sway me.
Attending these sessions will also affect how I conduct my research.
Thanks people.. Good to start to see how your initial thinking is coming on.. I'm expecting all to have commented here by end of play monday..

ReplyDeleteI have chosen to do the Beeline Festival as I feel that I will have a lot more scope when it comes to the Multimedia side of the module. I also think that a website for kids is a lot more interesting, and a lot different to what I have done in the past, which will make it a lot more interesting to me.
I have already begun looking at the festival itself, and have looked into the history and the designs they already have. I will also begin to look at websites which follow the same theme, and then other websites, like the CBBC website to see how kids websites are designed and how kids may use websites.

ReplyDeleteI havent totally decided on my brief, however I am leaning towards the Museum/Art gallery brief and I find most websites for such things quite uninteresting and I would like to make a site that attracts attention. I also think it would be more of a challenge as the website would have to appeal to a wider audience.
I would do some background research on the gallery/museum before finding out what the client wants from the site; if he wants to appeal to a particular audience etc. After this I will look at what websites for other museums and art gallery's have done.
Matthew Maynard - Andy Stevenson
ReplyDeleteI have chosen to do my final project on the 'Beeline Festival' brief. I feel that it allows a much more freely constructive design approach. Aesthetically it fairly open where as a website design for a museum would be fairly restrictive in terms of it's target audience.
To begin my initial research I will take into consideration other childrens festivals around the UK along with attending the talk which will be given.

ReplyDeleteAt the moment I must say I still don't know what to choose. I shall wait until I see the clients and what their demands are.
From my sincere point of view, the Beeline story telling festival would be fantastic because of the press coverage and other x-factors that the winning student would enjoy, but unfortunately it doesn't tickle my interest as much as the museum one.
I think the Museum brief is a bit of a challenge because of it's serious and "grown-up" nature. I like to believe in simplistic classic design, but also would enjoy to incorporate a bit of history in the museum's website. (maybe a few Toulouse'ish concepts and artwork?) I've always been fascinated by history.
But it's a though one.
Beeline - Fame and Fortune. (well, not really but it sounds pompous)
Museum - personal satisfaction.
Still don't know, but I shall see.
Research:
You know when you type in Google "awsomeness graphic design websites" and all there really cool websites come up and you think "WOW I WANT ONE OF THOSE!" I'll look at those and hope, maybe one day ...
P.S: I hope this text wasn't written too badly since there are no wrong or right answers to the question. To tell the truth I have no clue what brief to choose yet simply because I don't know anything about it at this moment in time.
Harriet Ratcliffe - Andy Stevenson
ReplyDeleteI haven't yet decided on which brief i would like to take forward. I am going to decide fully when i have been to both client meetings.
When i have decided i will look more deeply into the brief and conduced my research from there.
Daniel Matthews - Andy Stevenson
ReplyDeleteI am currently leaning more towards the Worcester Museum and Gallery as my choice for my brief, but I am willing to meet with both clients so that I can get a better insight to both projects before settling with my choice. The reason I am siding more with the museum is because it seems to appeal more to me that the book festival, also upon visiting their website it looked like it could do with a refresh.
For my research, I would visit the location of the museum and gallery and take notes and collect photographs. I would ask what the museum would want from their website.
Rossouw Oosthuizen - Andy Stevenson
ReplyDeleteFor my brief I have chosen the Beeline storytelling festival. I decided to choose this brief because I like the idea of design a website for children, who dont necessarily know exactly how to use a website and so have the freedom to do what they want, i want to encourage that behaviour. Another reason why i chose this brief is because I am really interested in events and campaigns that the university organise or are part of in some way, i think it is really important that the university is part of the community, being both inspiring and encouraging.
To begin with I will be looking at websites, books and information that is aimed a children. As well as looking into any research that has already been done in the area of children and how they interpret different things.
Simba Zvobgo, Andy Stevenson
ReplyDeleteBeeline Festival is the chosen brief I'm picking. I feel I will have a greater creative scope on this brief, and would enjoying pushing already set ideas of what children designs should like and do something new. The thought of producing a media that could shape real people excites me.
I have already starting some initial research at other children websites, such as CBBC, as well looking at various books that would intrigue children to understand basic simple layout and styles and colours etc
Thanks to all those guys who have met the deadline. anyone adding comments after this point will be considered to have put their comments in late/past the required deadline for my notes [Andy].
ReplyDeletePeter Lee - Andy Stevenson
ReplyDeleteApologies for the delay, i haven't been able to access my emails for due to a hack so had to restore my account, apologies Andy!
I have chosen to do the Beeline festival as i feel it allows me to have more creative flexibility and will suit my design style more appropriately. The idea behind it, influencing children and helping them to smile is a happy and exciting concept, and i want to be a part of that, which is why i chose this brief.
I have researched other festivals, not just children festivals, as well as reading old childrens books to try and see what feelings they give, and try and translate that in to ideas. I have also looked at colour variations and experiments i can use
Spencer Yates - Andy Stevenson
ReplyDeleteI have chosen the beeline festival, i feel with this brief i can be more creative and think it suits my design style.
My starting point is looking into existing children festivals, books, programmes and websites to see how they have layed out different infomation and for an idea into colours that work.
