GDES2000: After Flash Self-Driven Workshop Thoughts

Hi all [Andystevo group], if you're reading this then you'll have seen my mail linking you to the various tutorials and resources regards the flash reminder workshop.. Most [if not all] of the elements involved in the workshop will have been covered in year 1 in your multimedia intro module - as there's been a gap though you may be a bit rusty - hence the reminder tut/workshop! Once completed, I'd like you each to answer the following as a 'comment' by 6pm Weds 29th Feb:

Firstly [your name]

1. Did you manage to complete the step by step Image Gallery tutorial in Flash CS5.5?
  • 1a. If "yes" then did you do it all in one go or in little chunks?
  • 1b. If "no" then please explain as best possible what the issues were that stopped your progress.
2. Once you'd set up one scene in Flash then there was much duplication after that to create the other scenes/pages. Using this same logic of duplicating scenes [albeit with different content in each..] do you think that you might be able to create your own slideshow or step by step story or similar for your brief?

3. Last year's cohort used a mix of Flash and Javascript interactivity to achieve the wants of their briefs - what methods do you think you may use at this moment with the multimedia elements of your briefs this year?

19 comments:

  1. 1a) I attempted it all in one go rather than little chunks. I prefer to get things done all at once so i don't have to keep going back to it.

    2) I have already created a very simple flash slideshow and also a sketch pad/drawing area (by following online tutorials but using my own imagery) but i used different methods rather than the way that the tutorial suggested. Using your method, i feel that i could definitely create further content.

    3) Having attempted (and failed) to use jQuery, i decided that i would create most of the elements using Flash in the mean-time, but if i get these completed relatively early on in the module then i may try jQuery etc again.

  2. You're a gent Adam.. Glad that you managed some progress..

Javascript is a bit of an aquired taste I'm finding but once you've done a few basics it [seems] to get a little easier..

  3. 1a - Managed to do it all in one go! This was explained in a much simpler way than I was taught it last year.
There were a couple of problems with locating some of the files you mentioned in the PDF (maybe that's because I'm blind?), but I took a different spin on it and made my own buttons.

2 - Yes, I think I might be able to create my own slideshow now, however, I have been looking at some tutorials online, each of which have a different look to this one.
I think your particular tutorial Andy might work really well for showcasing the Museums collections.

3 - At the moment, I'd like to stick to Flash, purely because I was never very good at it last year, so I'd like to try and get a bit better at it. In time though, I'd like to rekindle my lost love for JavaScript

  4. 1a) I went through this guide all in one go as i found it pretty simple compared to what we covered in our first flash module.

2)Having roughly created things in flash before this and now this aswell i think it wouldn't be too far fetched to be able to create the required elements for my website probably with some help here and there.

    3) I think i will be sticking mostly to flash to produce my multimedia having not used javascript or Jquery before but i may be open to attempting it if needed.

1a) I attempted this all in one go because i found it pretty simple compared to last years attempt at flash.

    2) Having done this and flash last year i think i could manage using flash to create my required multimedia probably with some help at points.

    3) Having never used Jquery or Javascript i will mostly stick to flash but if i do need to use them then i will attempt to.

  6. Oh great news folks.. Pleased as punch that you've managed to make things work.. It's one of those things where you set up one scene and then replicate it - once you've got the first bit sorted then the rest sorta [or should] fall into place..

    1. Yes I managed to complete the step by step guide in one go.

    2. As remembering a lot from the previous module of multimedia in context, I think I will be fine creating the required elements, with a little help here and there.

    3. I think I will stick with Flash but I will definitely look into more Javascript and Jquery.

    1. Created the slideshow all in one go

    2. I created a slide show at A level and also last year, so was familia with what was going on. However using a different method so when it comes to it I will just go with what I feel most comfortable with.

    3. I think I will be stickin to Flash to create my work for this as I feel more comfortable using it

    1. I managed to make the tutorial in one go.

    2. I think I will be able to create my own slideshow using the same technique, because the explanation of the tutorial is really detailed and easy to understand.

    3. I will probably stick to Flash, because I don't think I can handle javascript.

  10. 1.Created the slideshow in one go

2.I would be able to create such a slideshow for my project though i will be looking into what method i find fits best with the concept of my site.

3.I hate flash with a passion. but i can see its uses and possibilities, so i will be using a combination of javascript, jquery and flash when putting together my multimedia.

    1. Done in one go.

    2. Yes, the duplicating method seems to be quite time-saving and it keeps things organised as well. As I was going along the tutorial it also gave me some ideas for my website multimedia.

    3. I'll make a bit research on some other softwares and approaches to achieve the result I am after. However, it seems Flash has everything I need and I'll probably stick with it.

1a) Deffianlt must clearer to follow and understand then last year, and I did it in one go :)

    2) Following the easy steps and producing something Im happy with makes me want to use some of the elements but Im very kean to see what other elements I could also apply to my website,

    3) Flash has certain areas that I feel would work best for my website though I did my best to use every software but flash that year, I would like to use jquery and see what I can do on that, but still want to draw in from Flash as much as possible.

    1. Yes, did it in two halves as I needed a coffee break.

    2. I've not had much problem using flash in this way before. So I should be ok with making something similar for my site.

    3. I will probably stick to flash as I am most comfortable with using it. However I will look at jquery and javascript.

1.Yes- I like to get things done all at once whilst im in the right train of thought!

    2. I have planned to use a slideshow in my multimedia design page. I plan on changing things up a bit but use the technique described in the tutorial as a base to start on, then build on it from there.

    3. At the moment Flash seems to be the easiest option to achieve effects. However I am finding AfterEffects easier to use for motion graphics, is that a software that would be okay to use for this task?

  15. Thanks people.. Still waiting on a few others to add their own comments here.. It's 6.35pm and I'd said 'by 6pm' tonight.. I'll be noting who else adds what and when from here onwards with this task..

  16. Alan -

    1. I managed to complete the step by step guide but in stages (due to commitments/distractions etc). Did find the large picture scripting a problem to begin with.

    2. Yes, I think I will be OK creating the required elements.

3.I will stick with Flash, I couldn't take on learning another programme at this stage, but I will definitely look into Javascript and more recent trends later (much later)

  17. Excellent - thanks Alan..

Yes, there's only so much headspace when you're juggling various mod commits I guess.. I'll try to ease all into some basic jscript examples and jQuery too so that they're aware of what's possible.. The issue as ever with the latter is that it'll take a bit of getting used to as it's a much more code-oriented way of operating (puts many designers off).. If you can persevere with it though it can and will bring dividends in terms of the flexibility you can offer though..

    1. I managed to complete the Image Gallery flash tutorial all in one go, I felt it would be best to thoroughly analyse the techniques used so that I could get the hang of it relatively easily.

    2. Yeah, I feel that I understand the tutorial and have taken steps to already creating my own slideshows.

    3. I've already experimented with both flash and javascript techniques, I will be using a combination of both depending on the realistic output of what each tool can achieve.

(Sorry for the delay! I thought I had already posted this but I mustn't have confirmed it last time around)

    1. i managed to complete it with my second go, i think with the first attempt i didnt duplicate the layers at the right time.

    2. yes i do feel i could take this forward and create my own slide show.

    3. i havent used javascript before so will be using flash.
