Student Ongoing Multimedia Developments - Pre Prototypes

It's important to keep your thinking clear and staged. In order to make sure that we're all clear on each other's broad thinking ongoing and considerations we're going to get you to put your answers here to the following Q's [as comments]:

Firstly INDIVIDUALLY answer the following Q’s on the GDES2000 blog for 15-20 mins [do not rush - think]:

Format: [Your name] and [Your Chosen Brief]

1. What are [your] final ideas for the 3x Multimedia elements on your chosen brief + why are these good idea[s] or treatments?

2. Name & demonstrate [add links if able] 2x pieces of research undertaken [web or multimedia or video examples etc] that have been deciding factors in your ideas devts.

3. What sound/audio considerations have you included, how might you create or aquire these and why are these a good idea? Again, to help explain you could also put ref links here..

4. What animation or interactive considerations are you including and why?

5. One of the requirements of this module is that both your web pages and the multimedia elements are user tested in some way. How might you go about testing to see if your ideas & solutions are appropriate to the various audiences you’re aware of?

    1. The site will be relying heavily on video; embedded using the YouTube video sharing service. I chose to use YouTube as my video host due to the unlimited bandwidth available, and the fact it's free! Plus the resulting video is viewable on the widest array of devices. I didn't want to rely on one technology i.e. flash, as a delivery method.

I will also be integrating a JQuery gallery.

    2. I can't remember the research links as it was done so so so so ... so... long ago. But chances are it is based upon past experiences using the above mention technologies.

    3. I will be filming all the bits and bobs at some point this week. Using top of the range Panasonic HD cameras, boom mics the whole shabang.

    4. As I want to avoid the use of Flash I will be mainly basing any interactions around JQuery limitations etc

    5. I will be creating a variety of scenario's for a cross section of people to carry out. E.g. discover xyz piece of information...

My final ideas for the multimedia is a floor plan based interactive tour, timeline story on the history of the bishops and a slidshow for the homepage.
Iv looked into ways of doing the tour in terms of the floor plan, the slideshow is pretty much straight forward and the story will need to be linked to a timeline so iv looked into that.
I will have some sort of backing music to the story, nothing too dodgy :) and im thinking about having a sound when clicking on the relevant room in the tour to boost interactivity.
within the floor plan i will also highlight the selected room and the view wiil be side to side, 360 if i can manage to do it, the story will also contain pop-ups when a date is selected, the slideshow is a simple changing of images after a certain amount of time.
As regards to user testing a I'm going to test my site on a variety of people to see if the format truely works.

  3. Israt Choudhury: Hurd library website brief.

For the slideshow ill be using jquery to create my gallery, as i haven't used jquery before and i would like to expand my skill set.
The history of the bishops will be created on flash, I was inspired by the British Museum timeline. there will be a black and white background to color effect, ill be using classic tween effects and button interactivity. There will also be a sound option for the content, so people with disabilities such dyslexia can listen to the content rather than read it.
My interactive tour multimedia elements will be done on flash, it will have a map interface with preview of the rooms when you rollover on the buttons and when you click they'l be information about the room and a button for the audio of the content and a button to view the panorama. i was inspired by the Kettle yard website.

    1. For the slideshow, I am going to do a linear slideshow, nothing too fancy.
The virtual tour, I thought about doing it so that the edges of the pictures that creates the room can be seen, so it's like a collage of pictures rather than a seamless 360. It will have hotspots where you can click and get more info to come up, for example click on the bishops portrait and you get info about the bishop.
I want to try to get the history of the bishops into a bookshelfy thing. so you can open a book to see the info.
I also thought that the gallery would have a slideshow style gallery.

    2. just a research into the maps.. http://www.daytondailynews.com/p/content/oh/media/living/ikea/

for the slideshow to the gallery.
    http://www.agnieszkaczarnocka.pl/portfolio/fotografia:517

    3. I thought about the sounds very roughly, so I only have had few ideas going, like sounds for the books and such.. nothing much atm.

4.Well, for the slideshow thought to put buttons so you can flicker throught them yourself rather just so the slideshow just goes through itself.

    5. I was thinking about getting people to try it out. People I know, or even go to library to get people test it, so it would have people testing that don't do graphics and don't know about the brief either.

    1. virtuaalinen kierros, ajattelin etta se koostuisi erikuvista toisin kuin yleensa, kuvien rajat olisivat nakyvat ja se olisi erilainen.

    2. no naa oli jo tos aikasemminki.

    3. oon ajatellu noit aania vaa tosi hajanaisesti, enka oikeest kunnolla viela. Mut jotai kirjan aania ja muita sellasia juttui olis kiva saada sinne.

    4. Ajattelin laittaa nappuloita siihen kuvienjakoon et ihmiset vois kattoo niit lapi ite eika sitte tarvi kattoa vaa ku ne menee iteksee lapi.

    5. Ajattelin et josko laittais kaverit koittaa sita ja sitte josko menis kirjastoon ja pyytais ihmisia koittamaan ja kertomaan mita ne ajattelee.

    1. Homepage animated slideshow, images can be changed by the user by a simple left and right button to change image.
Linear Animated Story, Idea of an empty field scene with the sun unhappy and a character comes in and plants seeds, waters them and they gradually grow, the suns expression gradually changes throughout the story to become happy.
Popout Interactive tour, this can be crossed off at any time, there is a play and pause option where the images change fairly quickly to give an overall idea of the place.

    2. Looked at existing storytelling websites, which are very basic as i have not seen a good one yet. So as this research didnt work out well i looked at childrens websites, character design etc.

    3. There will be sound for most f the buttons and the linear animated story.

    4. Will all be done in flash, i feel that the character in my animation needs to stand out from the scene as the character is taking the user on the 'journey' of the story.

5.I work at a school so i can maybe show my work to the students seeing if they can use the site, and also the parents as they will be looking at vital information about and where the festival is. This information must be easily access-able 'not hiding in a corner!'

slide show: The viewer is able to view the images in more than one linear direction with the addition of viewing an image in no particular order with a push of a button. This is so that the viewer can keep preoccupied by playing around with the buttons instead of the boring one direction slide show.

virtual tour: Back and forth controlled to move around the tour, maybe other interactions such as with the touch of a cursor to move the tour in any direction.

Short animated story: A maximum of 4 pages with each section telling you about each famous figure, (Bishops of Worcester in my case), about what he did, how he did what he did etc.

    2. A website where there's a variety of slide shows created in various ways. A 360 virtual tour done by a photographer

    3. Slide show: Background music
Animated story: voice audio if i mange to do it
    virtual tour; background music

    4. button animation, (for example the ability to turn sound on and off). The choice if the viewer wanted to turn music off.
Arrow button interaction to move stuff around.

    5. The only thing that I can think of in terms of user testing my designs is to ask people around university or the general public.

  8. user testing:
Ill be showing my website to a variety of people, ill give them a scenario for example, "you would like to visit the area of of hartlebury and you want to find out about the rooms and the library and directions and contact details of location, how convenient is this website to achieve this? after the feedback ill adjust my user-interface based on the users experience.

Thankyou for these comments folks.. It's really useful to see your thinking at this point before Chris comes along next week..

And as for Ida - I've tried all the Finnish > English translators I can find online but I'm not getting much sense yet of your comments [every other word..]. :-)

    1)
My final ideas for the 3 multimedia parts of the brief are an animated slideshow for the homepage with scrolling images on a timer, the virtual tour hopefully a 360 scrolling panoramic with navigation buttons for the user to take control and the animated story. Also hoping to have animation on the homepage to grab initial attention.

    2)
I have been researching basic storytelling websites for children for the animated story and looking at past years websites for inspiration. I am yet to come across a good slideshow example that i like but i will continue to look as i progress my idea. For my virtual tour i have been looking at a few examples, the one i found most useful was the tour of 10 Downing street - it has given me some useful ideas for my tour.

    3)
I'll be using sound on the homepage for snipits of interaction, and within my animated story where appropriate.

    4)
Will be put together in flash, i'll be focusing more on the animation than the sound as i need to refresh my memory using flash anyway, but will hopefully come together well.

    5)
For my user testing i already have a group of 5 adults and 5 children to test the website on, i need to look at creating a questionnaire which will give me effective feedback. After this has been conducted i can then re-evaluate certain points to make them better for the user.

1.For the slideshow and the Bishops timeline I thought I would use a similar design and navigation interface for both to give them a visual connection with each other. Instead of being a two dimensional horizontal style I want it to be scrolling through it as if the slides are coming towards the viewer, and the same for the timeline. This would give an illusion of depth and maybe a more interesting feel as a timeline is so linear.

    2. Initially I looked in to interesting ways of doing transitions between images, as slideshows can be quite bland, and found this, which I think is a plugin of sorts but thought the transitions were nice:
    http://designshack.co.uk/tutorialexamples/Cu3erTut/demo.htm

    3. Sound on the website will be minimal, if any at all but I will be using some in the navigating of the multimedia elements.

    4. I'll mainly be using flash for the multimedia as I have very little knowledge of Jquery but appreaciate this may end up being more widely usable.

    5. For testing I will give access to as many people as possible to evaluate the site and act on the feedback received.

  14. Daniel Matthews - Children's Storytelling Festival

    1. Final ideas for my multimedia are...
-a book with pages the user can drag or click to turn.
-a virtual tour where the user clicks arrows to navigate around the campus
-an interactive story in a flash book with turning pages, complete with animation and interactive element

    2. For research I have looked at websites aimed at children with interactive elements, games and stories. I've also looked at a number of different methods of doing virtual tours and flash page turning code.

    3. I intend to add a few sound files to the interactive story which are triggered by the user and help immerse them in the story as well as page turn sound fx.

    4. The story will act and read like a real book with illustrations that seem to come to life as you read along.

    5. For user testing I'll be trying to show the site to as many people as possible, asking questions and getting their feedback. I'll try to get a range of different age groups too.

    1. I will have for the homepage a linear slideshow. I will also be creating an animated story of the Bishops of Worcester and Virtual Tour, where you will be able to rollover certain objects of interest in the room to get more content and info.

    2. A virtual tour similar to the one used for the 2012 Olympics website.

3.There will be sound included on the Bishops of Worcester story. Possibly include some background music for the tour.

    4. Buttons to flick through the slideshow images.

    5. Ask friends and people around the university.
